Bring your best imagery and rhymes to the Village of Orland Park Arts Commission's third annual Poetry Slam on Saturday, August 25.

Open to poets both young and old, the Poetry Slam runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the exhibit hall of the village's Cultural Center, 14760 S. Park Lane. The cost is $5 to attend and $3 to participate or "spit."

"The village Arts Commission has been doing a great job to sponsor different types of events for the community," said Trustee Dan Calandriello, chair of the village's Recreation and Parks Committee. "They held their first poetry slam two years ago, had a great response, and bring it back each year."

All poetry content must be PG-13, and prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants. A panel of judges will determine the winners.

Tickets will be available at the door. To learn more, contact Jean Petrow at (708) 364-0682 or jpetrow@orlandpark.org.

In September, the Orland Park Arts Commission will present Joni Bishop: Art Exhibit and Concert on September 23 at 2 p.m. The art exhibit opens at 2 p.m. with the concert beginning at 4 p.m.

Bishop is an accomplished singer songwriter, guitarist, visual artist and instrument maker. A resident of Nashville for more than 20 years and her shows are a combination of music, folk art, paintings, photography and handmade instruments.

"Joni Bishop combines her talents to create a live performance that is rootsy, down home and uniquely her own," said Orland Park Recreation Program Supervisor Jean Petrow, the staff liaison to the arts commission. "Hers is a unique, multi-dimensional program for all ages."

Tickets for the September 23 Joni Bishop Show are $20 each, $15 for students. They will be available online, at the village's Sportsplex and at Recreation Administration.
