The Orland Park Health and Fitness Center began the new year with a new name, officially becoming a village facility on January 4, 2017.

Mayor Dan McLaughlin and members of the Village Board hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 11 officially welcoming the center to the village's amenities.

"It's been a long process and the village board and I are thrilled to celebrate the fitness center now being a village facility," said Mayor Dan McLaughlin.

It was in March, 2016 that McLaughlin announced the village working with St. George Corporation, the parent of Palos Community Hospital, to draft a memo of understanding to preserve the former Palos Health and Fitness Center at 15430 West Avenue.

The 77,000 square foot facility that opened in 2001 was earmarked for demolition because of Palos Health Care's $130 million dollar expansion project with Loyola Medical Center. The now Orland Park Health and Fitness Center was saved by the village when the mayor worked with hospital officials to adjust the hospital's expansion plans.

"A lot of people use the center for its therapeutic water pool, the indoor swimming pool and fitness amenities and it worked out well for everyone ---truly a win-win situation," McLaughlin said.

Adding an indoor pool to the village's fitness offerings saves the village millions of dollars.

"We've talked about adding an indoor pool to the village's Sportsplex and our saving this building eliminates that need," McLaughlin said. "The village's Recreation Department will now offer indoor swimming at the Orland Park Health and Fitness Center."

The facility offers medically focused fitness programs, state-of-the-art cardio equipment, personal training, strength training equipment, group exercise classes, the aquatics area, yoga and Pilates, swim lessons, an indoor track and a full court gymnasium.

Free fitness assessments are available with memberships as well as personalized exercise plans, equipment orientation, exercise classes and specialty programs. The building is staffed by degreed and certified fitness specialists.

The full service locker rooms include complimentary towel service and toiletries as well as lockers. Each women's and men's locker room has its own steam room, whirlpool and sauna.

"Everything that the village can offer at this facility benefits the entire community. We have indoor aquatics and a full fitness center right in the middle of town," the mayor said.

The 82 degree indoor lap pool offers five lanes, 25 yards in length. The adjacent warm water therapy pool is kept at 92 degrees with a depth range of three and a half feet to five feet. Both pools offer fitness and leisure swimming, scheduled swim lessons and a number of aquatic classes for all levels.

The free weights area features the latest machines along with a variety of dumbbells and barbells. An assortment of cardio machines is available including treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bikes. The center also includes an indoor running track, child care for members, group exercise studios, a full sized gymnasium and a spa that offers facials and massages.

"The village will be making a number of investments in the facility during 2017 improving its infrastructure, locker rooms and other areas. We invite everyone to visit this new addition to the village's facilities," the mayor said.
