May 1 Deadline to Add Vets’ Names to Orland Park’s Memorial

Veterans May Be Living or Deceased and Need Not Live in Orland Park

ORLAND PARK, IL (April 12, 2019)  — The Village of Orland Park hosts ceremonies each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, inviting area families to add their veterans' names to the village's granite walls bordering the village's Veterans Memorial, Ara Pace – Place of Peace.

“We gather as a community each Memorial Day and Veterans Day to remember those who have served our great nation,” said Mayor Keith Pekau, a veteran of the United States Air Force. “Everyone is invited to join us on Memorial Day when we remember those who have died in service to our country and announce the veterans’ names that have been added to the village’s memorial.”

The last day to add a veteran's name to Orland Park's granite memorial for this year's Memorial Day Ceremony is Wednesday, May 1. The cost to add a name is $250 which covers the cost of engraving and maintenance of the memorial. Veterans may be living or deceased and do not have to live in Orland Park.

Tom Dubelbeis serves as the veterans’ liaison for the village’s Veterans Commission and oversees the village’s ceremonies.

“It’s nice to look out at the crowd and see entire families join us to salute our veterans on Veterans Day and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice when we gather on Memorial Day,” Dubelbeis said. “The village’s Memorial Day Ceremonies have become family traditions for many as it’s a day of remembrance and welcomes summer to Orland Park.”

The village’s Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 at 1 p.m. at the Orland Park Village Center, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue. The public is invited and attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs.

"It's very touching when we announce the names of the newly added veterans," the mayor said. "Veterans who are still with us proudly stand and wave and family and friends stand for those who have passed away."

Information about the Orland Park Veterans Commission and access to an online listing of veterans’ names on the village’s memorial can be found at https://orlandpark.org/services/veterans.

Orland Park’s memorial is located south of the Frederick T. Owens Village Hall at 14700 South Ravinia Avenue. The Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. followed by refreshments being served inside of the adjacent Orland Park Civic Center. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
