Heavy Rains and Cold Temps Cancel Orland Park Garden Walk

Outdoor spring sports aren't the only victims of the wet and cold spring of 2011. Excessive rain and low temperatures have forced the cancellation of the Open Lands of Orland Park's annual Garden Walk planned for Sunday, June 26.

"Gardeners have told us that this season's rains have saturated their gardens and that they don't feel they would be suitable for a late June walk," said Orland Park Village Trustee Kathy Fenton, chair of the village's Community Outreach and Special Events Committee and a member of the Open Lands Commission. "The weather hasn't been warm enough for many of these gardens to flourish," Fenton added.

An annual summer favorite, the garden walk fundraiser includes boutique vendors outside of the Orland Park Civic Center with attendees traveling to select homes in Orland Park to see beautiful gardens.

"The Garden Walk is a wonderful opportunity to see how very talented some of our residents are," Fenton said, "Hopefully, next year's weather will be more cooperative and all of the flowers in Orland Park will be in full bloom."

The village's thirteenth annual Garden Contest is on as planned with amateur gardeners invited to compete. Open to residents of single-family homes within the corporate limits of the village, the contest welcomes those who plant and maintain their own gardens.

"People who plant and tend to their own gardens are invited to participate in the village's annual contest," said Trustee Brad O'Halloran who first suggested the competition thirteen years ago. "This is a separate event from the garden walk," he added.

Traditional and/or unusual gardens are welcome and judging will be based on originality, creativity and overall maintenance as well as the use of native landscaping, color, texture and the variety and combination of plants and flowers used.

The deadline for Garden Contest entries is June 15 with judging taking place in mid to late July or early August. Awards will be presented at a Village Board meeting in September. Entry forms are available on the village's website at www.orland-park.il.us and there is no cost to participate. Details about the 2011 Garden Contest are available by calling 708/403-6145.
