Posted on 05/21/2015

Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin will host his Summer Senior Coffee on Monday, June 22 at 1 p.m. at the Orland Park Civic Center.

The guest speaker for the semi-annual event is Orland Park native, Andrea Darlas, an award winning radio and television news anchor/reporter at Chicago’s WGN Radio and WGN TV.

“We’re excited to have Andrea Darlas join us on June 22, sharing where her career has taken her since she grew up in Orland Park,” McLaughlin said. “She comes back often to help local causes and it will be fun to hear what it’s like to work for one of the most well-known call signs in the country --- WGN,” he said.

Darlas is the morning news anchor on WGN Radio, weekend reporter on WGN-TV and a contributor to the nationally syndicated television show “House Smarts.”

“I’m thrilled to be coming home for the coffee,” Darlas said. “I come back to Orland Park a lot and it will be fun to spend some time talking about my work at WGN,” she said.

During her 17 years at WGN, Darlas has won many awards from the Associated Press and the Illinois Broadcasters’ Association for anchoring, reporting, breaking news coverage and investigative series reports. She has received five Silver Dome Awards for best newscast and two prestigious Peter Lisagor Awards, one for television and one for radio reporting.

“All seniors are invited to join us for a cup of coffee and some refreshments,” the mayor said. “This promises to be a fun, interesting presentation.”

A graduate of Victor J. Andrew High School, Darlas holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Illinois and sits on the university’s College of Media’s National Alumni Board as well as the U of I Campus Alumni Advisory Board. She also serves on the board of directors for the Crisis Center for South Suburbia and is actively involved with the CARA Chicago Program to help fight homelessness. Darlas is an avid Blackhawks and Illini fan and enjoys playing golf and traveling in her spare time.

There is no charge to attend the coffee and refreshments will be served. The Orland Park Civic Center is located at 14750 South Ravinia Avenue, one block west of LaGrange Road.
