The Village of Orland Park Public Works Department has announced that Ravinia Avenue will be closed for road reconstruction from 153rd Street to 159th Street, August 11 to August 18, 2009.

This project includes complete pavement and base removal and replacement, future 156th Street intersection improvements and extensive curb, sidewalk and storm sewer repairs.

"Ravinia Avenue has become a major thoroughfare in Orland Park and our crews are doing a great job with these critical improvements," said Trustee Bernie Murphy, chair of the village's Public Works Committee.

The improvement project began in earnest on July 23. Current work includes curb repair and replacement along with storm sewer repairs and needed upgrades at the future 156th Street intersection.

"This phase will require intermittent lane closures and flagging and will continue through August 10," said Acting Public Works Director John Ingram.

Beginning August 11 and continuing for six business days, Ravinia Avenue will be closed to through traffic from 153rd Street to 159th Street. The pavement and base will be removed to facilitate reconstruction. Only local traffic will be permitted through because of the extensive improvements being made.

Additionally, through traffic will not be permitted on West Avenue, south of 153rd Street. Local access from 153rd Street for Centennial Village, Centennial Pool and the Palos Primary Care Center via West Avenue will not be impaired.

Also closed will be 154th Street at Ravinia Avenue. Residents of Ravinia Glen may use Wilshire Drive at 153rd Street to access their subdivision. Constitution Drive will be closed at Ravinia Avenue and residents of the Centennial Village Townhomes may use Centennial Drive at West Avenue to access their neighborhood.

"These are significant improvements that will greatly improve conditions in this area of the village," Ingram said. "We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to the cooperation of the residents in these areas," he said.

Ingram added, "The Ravinia Avenue improvements will also affect the Public Works Department," noting that the department's facility is at 15655 South Ravinia Avenue. "Our building will be open during the road improvements. It may be a bit difficult to get here at times, but we will be open for service," he said, smiling.

Murphy added, "The Ravinia Avenue reconstruction is the most extensive and complicated project in the 2009 Road Improvement Program."

Projects already completed include resurfacing West Avenue between 153rd Street and Ravinia Avenue and the OrlanBrook cul-de-sacs, Shagbark Court, Lexington Circle, Nicole Court, Lawrence Court and Lisa Court. Still to be completed this year are 152nd and OrlanBrook, Park Station Boulevard and 167th Street at 88th Avenue, along with miscellaneous patching and storm sewer repairs.

Vehicle access to the Centennial Village Condominiums on the east side of Ravinia Avenue between 159th Street and West Avenue from 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. will be severely restricted. On-street parking for these residents will be allowed and is encouraged within the Centennial Village Townhomes west of Ravinia Avenue on Constitution Drive and Centennial Drive.

Drivers who normally use Ravinia Avenue are encouraged to use LaGrange Road or 108th Avenue as alternate routes. All construction dates are subject to change due to the weather.
