The Village of Orland Park is bracing for the predicted near 100 degree temperatures in the coming days coupled with high heat indices.

Temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 90s Saturday morning through Monday evening. With the heat index, it could feel like more than 100 degrees. Sunset won't bring much relief, as the heat indices are expected to remain in the 90s in the evenings and possibly into the overnight hours.

The National Weather Service has reported that Cook County will be under an Excessive Heat Watch from Saturday through Monday.

"The extreme temperatures have everyone's attention," said Orland Park Trustee Pat Gira, chair of the village's Public Safety Committee. "We're asking residents to check on elderly and disabled friends and neighbors to make sure they're okay," she said.

The Orland Park Police Facility, at 15100 South Ravinia Avenue, is the village's designated cooling center.

"Those who need a cooling center should come to the police station and, if necessary, we can open other village buildings for those who need them," said Police Chief Tim McCarthy.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two of the biggest concerns with excessive temperatures. High temperatures and humidity can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The risk is higher for the elderly or those with preexisting health conditions.

Health officials urge people to limit strenuous outdoor activities, check on elderly and disabled relatives, friends and neighbors and wear loose fitting clothing.

The village is notifying residents of the availability of cooling centers through the local media, its website and social media.

McCarthy added, "If someone needs help, call and let us know."

Residents are encouraged to check the village's website for updates at www.orlandpark.org.
